During her undergraduate years, Julia was on the frontlines of hurricane coverage. She reported live as Hurricane Ian made landfall in Palatka and St. Augustine, Florida, as a Category 1 storm. The following year, she served as a weather anchor, providing real-time analysis and forecasts as Hurricane Idalia barreled through the Big Bend region.
Her hands-on experience with these storms…from tracking their paths, understanding their impact, and conveying lifesaving information to the public became the catalyst for this book. The Weather Watchers serves as an accessible and engaging way to help children understand hurricanes and stay prepared.

After the wake of Hurricane Helene, Julia joined relief efforts in Cedar Key, a coastal community devastated by the storm. Despite warnings, many residents chose to stay, believing some homes could withstand the storm. The destruction was heartbreaking. Landmarks that once defined Cedar Key were reduced to rubble.
Amid the cleanup, Julia met residents who shared their stories, offering cherished memorabilia as tokens of gratitude, including an optimistic woman who offered her prized University of Florida collectibles damaged by the storm and shared her memories living in the area. These experiences deepened her understanding of why hurricane preparedness is crucial, reinforcing the message she now shares with young readers through The Weather Watchers.
